Presser foot lift is how far the foot rises above the needle plate — and it is the specification that decides whether a machine can sew thick fabric.
Most manufacturers do not publish it. They publish motor power and stitch count instead, neither of which tells you whether the machine will get over a folded jean hem.
Why it decides the outcome. A folded denim hem can be six to eight layers. If the foot cannot rise high enough to sit flat on top of that stack, it tips as it climbs. A tipped foot does two things: it stops gripping the fabric, so the feed dogs no longer move it, and it holds the needle at an angle so it deflects and breaks. The machine stitches on the spot and the needle snaps. People conclude the motor is weak. It is not the motor.
The numbers. Light domestic machines lift around 5 to 6 mm. Better domestic machines manage 7 to 8 mm, sometimes with a two-stage lever that gives a little more. Juki publishes 12 mm on the TL-2010Q, which is roughly double a light machine and is why it is on our quilting guide.
How to find it out. Look for a two-stage presser foot lever, which is a good sign. Otherwise measure it in the shop with a ruler — it takes ten seconds and no salesperson will have the figure.
Questions people actually ask
Can I work around a low foot lift?
Partly. Level the foot with a folded scrap as you approach the seam, hammer the fold flatter, and crawl. Below a certain thickness the machine simply cannot pass, and no technique changes that.
Is a stronger motor the same thing?
No, and this is the confusion the marketing encourages. Motor power moves the needle through the fabric; foot lift decides whether the fabric can get under the foot at all.
