What to sew first, and what to avoid

Some fabrics forgive everything and some punish a beginner for faults that are not theirs. Start with the forgiving ones — it is not a compromise, it is how you learn faster.

Buy a metre of plain quilting cotton in a mid tone. Plain, because a print hides your stitching and you need to see it. Mid tone, because you can see both light and dark thread on it. Woven, because it will not stretch out from under the foot. Learn straight seams, a hem and a buttonhole on that before you touch anything slippery. Everything difficult about jersey and chiffon is still difficult later — but by then it will be the only difficult thing.

Questions people actually ask

What is the easiest fabric to learn on?

Medium-weight woven cotton — quilting cotton, poplin, chambray. It does not slip, does not stretch, presses crisply and shows you exactly what your stitching is doing.

Which fabrics should a beginner avoid?

Jersey and knits until you have a jersey needle and understand feed. Chiffon and satin, which slip under the foot. And anything with a nap or a one-way print, where a cutting mistake costs the whole piece.
