Buy the bernette if you expect to keep the machine and want a dealer who stocks parts for it. That network is most of what you are paying the difference for.
Buy the Singer if price is the constraint. Just do not read "Singer" and expect the Heavy Duty chassis — this is a light plastic-bodied machine, and the confusion is the commonest disappointment in this brand.
Because at the bottom of a range the listings are written for price comparison, not for buyers who read. We have refused to fill the gaps from neighbouring models, which is why both pages look thin.
On a ten-year purchase, often. Timing drifts and belts perish, and a workshop that stocks your brand is the difference between a service and a replacement.
