Speed does not create a new fault, it exposes an existing one — the thread is passing a rough spot or heating in the needle eye, and only at speed does that reach breaking point.
Heat in the needle eye. Thread passes through the eye many times before it is finally stitched, and friction there warms it. Polyester softens; rayon and metallic threads are worse still. Slowing down is a real fix, not a workaround.
A needle too small for the thread. If the eye is tight, friction rises sharply with speed. Go up a needle size, or use a needle designed for the thread — topstitch, embroidery and metallic all have larger eyes and deeper grooves.
A rough spot somewhere in the path. Check the thread guides, the take-up lever, the needle plate hole and the bobbin case for a burr or a groove worn by years of thread. Run a length of old tights over each surface; it snags where metal is rough.
Thread coming off the spool badly. A cross wound spool on a vertical pin, or a parallel wound spool on a horizontal one, makes the thread twist as it feeds. At low speed it copes; at high speed it does not.
A fragile or old thread. Cotton degrades with age. Pull a length between your hands: good thread resists, old thread snaps quietly.
Confirm by slowing down first. If slow sewing is faultless, the cause is heat or feed rather than a mechanical defect.
Questions people actually ask
Is sewing slowly a proper solution?
For metallic and decorative threads, yes, and it is what experienced sewers do. For ordinary polyester on ordinary fabric it is a symptom to investigate.
Could it be the tension?
It can be, but check the needle and the thread path first. Tension tight enough to snap thread at speed usually shows other symptoms too.
