What is embroidery digitising?

Turning artwork into stitch instructions — deciding stitch types, directions, density, underlay and sequence, not simply converting a file.

Digitising is the process of converting artwork into stitch instructions: which stitch type goes where, in which direction, at what density, in what order, with what underlay.

It is not a file conversion. A picture has no stitches in it. A digitiser decides that this shape is a satin column running this way, that shape is a fill at this angle, this edge gets a running outline, and all of it sits on an underlay that stabilises the fabric first. That judgement is why good digitising costs money and automatic conversion usually disappoints.

What the digitiser controls. Stitch type — running, satin, fill. Density, which decides how solid and how stiff the result is. Underlay, the foundation stitching that flattens the fabric and holds it. Pull compensation, which slightly oversizes shapes so they close up when the thread pulls the fabric in. Sequence and colour order, which decide how many stops you get. Trims and jump stitches.

It is fabric-specific. A design digitised for a stable woven has too much density for a lightweight knit. This is why the same file behaves differently on two garments, and why designs are often sold labelled for a fabric type.

Doing it yourself needs dedicated software, from modest hobby packages to professional suites, plus practice — it is a craft rather than a menu.

Buying it done is realistic for a one-off logo. Supply clean vector artwork, state the finished size and the fabric, and ask for a stitch-out photograph before paying.

Questions people actually ask

Can my machine digitise?

A few machines and their software offer basic conversion of simple shapes. Anything with fine detail or lettering needs proper digitising software or a digitiser.

Why does my design need redigitising at a different size?

Because density and underlay are set for one size. Changing the size without recalculating them either perforates the fabric or leaves gaps.
