On most overlockers the blades are user-replaceable and the job takes a few minutes, but read your manual first — the arrangement varies.
Understand which blade wears. Overlockers have two: a fixed upper blade and a moving lower one, and they cut against each other like scissors. On most machines the lower moving blade is the sacrificial part and is softer by design, so it is the one that goes first. Replacing the wrong one is a waste.
Before replacing anything, check it is actually blunt. A blade that suddenly stops cutting is more often a blade that has drifted out of position, a jam of trimmed fibre in the cutting area, or a blade disengaged for non-trimming work. Clean and check the engagement lever first.
The method. Unplug the machine. Open the side cover. Turn the handwheel so the blade is at the most accessible point. Photograph or note the exact position and orientation before loosening the retaining screw. Fit the new blade, set it to the specified overlap with the other blade — usually a fraction of a millimetre of engagement — and tighten.
Setting the overlap is the part that matters. Too little and it will not cut cleanly; too much and the blades grind, which destroys both quickly.
Test on a scrap of medium woven fabric before touching a garment. The cut should be clean with no dragged or chewed fibres.
Order by machine model. Blades are not universal, and a blade of the wrong thickness will not sit correctly.
Questions people actually ask
How long should a blade last?
A long time in ordinary use. Blades usually fail early because something hard went through — a pin, a zip, or an interfaced edge with fusible glue on the blade.
Can I sharpen the old one?
Not reliably. The cutting geometry is specific and a hand-sharpened blade chews the edge. They are inexpensive parts, so replace rather than sharpen.
