How do I position an embroidery design accurately?

Mark the design centre and both axes on the fabric, align them with the marks on the hoop, then trace the outline on the machine before a single stitch is made.

Marking the fabric. Find the centre point of where the design should sit and mark it with a water-soluble pen or chalk. Draw a short vertical line and a short horizontal line through it — the axes matter more than the point, because they control rotation as well as position. On a garment, take the vertical from the centre front, not from a folded edge that may be off grain.

Aligning in the hoop. Every hoop has centre marks on all four sides, and most come with a plastic template with a grid printed on it. Drop the template into the hoop, line the fabric marks up with the grid, and hoop with the fabric taut and square.

Trace before stitching. Almost every machine can move the needle around the outer boundary of the design without stitching. Run it and watch where the needle goes relative to seams, buttons and edges. This catches almost every placement error while it is still free to fix.

Common placements as a starting point. A left chest motif sits roughly a hand’s width down from the shoulder seam and in line with the centre of the chest. A hoop or a printed placement guide is more reliable than measuring on a curved body.

Check twice on anything with a repeat — a second sleeve, a pair of towels. Measure from the same fixed reference on both, and record it.
