Unplug the machine first and let the bulb cool. Sewing machine bulbs sit in a confined space and get hot enough to burn.
Find the access. On most machines the bulb sits behind the face plate at the left-hand end, or above the needle area behind a small cover. The face plate is usually one screw or a clip. Consult the manual — some are far less obvious than they look, and levering the wrong panel breaks tabs.
Identify the fitting. Two types are common on older machines: a bayonet type that you push in slightly and twist to release, and a screw type that unscrews conventionally. Try a gentle push-and-twist first; if it resists, try unscrewing. Forcing the wrong motion snaps the glass, which is a nuisance in a confined space.
Fit the exact replacement specified in the manual — the same type, voltage and wattage. A higher wattage bulb produces more heat than the housing is designed for.
LED replacements are available for many machines and run far cooler, which matters in an enclosed housing. Check it is sold for your model and fitting.
On modern machines the light is often an LED module soldered in and not user-replaceable. If there is no bulb access in the manual, that is why, and a failed light is a workshop job.
A separate task light is a legitimate answer either way. Machine lights are dim on many models even when working, and a good adjustable lamp beside the machine improves accuracy more than the built-in light ever does.

The bulb broke off in the holder.
Unplug the machine, and grip the remaining metal base with pliers wrapped in cloth. Protect your eyes, and clear every fragment out of the machine afterwards.
My light flickers.
A loose bulb or a corroded contact usually. Unplug, remove the bulb, and refit it firmly. Persistent flickering on an LED module is an electronic fault.
