Do I need a five-thread overlocker?

Almost certainly not for home sewing. Five thread adds a chain stitch seam alongside the overlock, which is an industrial way of working.

For home sewing, almost certainly not. A four-thread machine covers what domestic sewing needs.

What five thread actually is. Two separate stitches formed at once: a two-thread chain stitch that constructs the seam, alongside a three-thread overlock that finishes the edge. It is often called a safety stitch. The chain stitch does the structural work and the overlock does the edge, in one pass.

Where it makes sense. Industrial and semi-industrial production, and heavy woven garments such as jeans and workwear where a strong straight seam plus a finished edge in one operation saves real time. It is a production efficiency more than a quality improvement.

Why most home sewers do not need it. The four-thread overlock already sews and finishes a knit seam in one pass. For wovens, sewing the seam on your sewing machine and overlocking the allowance afterwards gives you a pressed, adjustable seam — which is generally what you want on a garment you are fitting.

The practical costs. Five cones instead of four. More threading, and threading is already the part people find hardest. More tension dials to balance. And on many machines a conversion between configurations rather than a switch.

What is worth having instead. Reliable tension, a good differential feed range, easy threading, and adequate presser foot lift. Those affect every seam you sew; the fifth thread affects a use case most home sewers never reach.

If you sew heavy workwear in volume, the calculation changes. Otherwise a well-set-up four-thread machine is the better buy.

Questions people actually ask

What about a chain stitch on its own?

Some machines will sew chain stitch alone. It is a strong straight seam that unpicks easily from one end, which is useful for basting and for temporary seams.

Is more threads always better?

No. More threads means more configuration and more to go wrong. Match the machine to what you sew rather than to the specification list.
