The warning comes before the product. Check your manual first. A large share of machines sold in the last fifteen years are sealed units that are never meant to be oiled by the owner, and oiling one is not a neutral act. Where a machine does want oil, it wants one drop in the named places, not a general application — excess oil traps lint and turns into a paste that does the opposite of what you intended.
What most people should do instead. Clean. The overwhelming majority of machines that “stop working” are full of lint around the bobbin race, not short of oil. A brush and five minutes fixes more machines than any bottle.
